SOJ Market teams with the Patrick Henry Charter School for Winter Market

T’is the season, and this weekend marks the final shopping day of the year at the South of the James Farmers Market at Forest Hill Park.

But there’s no need to worry about stretching the leftover Christmas goose till spring, the SOJ Market isn’t going away. Instead, SOJ will jingle all the way up Semmes Avenue to the Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts (3411 Semmes Ave, Richmond VA 23225) for the South of the James Winter Market.

From Dec. 10 through April 28, 10 a.m. to noon, the SOJ Winter Market brings its European-style farmers market to the grounds of Virginia’s first elementary charter school, again offering a wide selection of produce, locally produced artisan meats, cheeses, wines and prepared foods, as well as a broad selection of Virginia artists and artisans.

In the tradition of our producer-only South of the James Market, the SOJ Winter Market also gives shoppers peace of mind of knowing that the food they buy and eat comes straight from the source.

Winter SOJ Market Begins Dec 10th

There’s one more SOJ market in Forest Hill Park and then on December 10th we move down the street to our winter market location on the playground of the Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts. (3411 Semmes Ave, Richmond VA 23225)

In the tradition of our producer only South of the James Market and because of high demand from local consumers for the producer-only market, our Winter Market this season will be producer-only as well. We appreciate all the positive feedback we’ve received from both customers and vendors on this decision.

The Virginia Street Gallery Brings Broad Street Arts to the Shockoe Design District

Design meets art on Virginia Street in historic Shockoe Slip with the opening of The Virginia Street Gallery, downtown Richmond’s premier showcase artist collective. Bringing the best of the Downtown Arts District and Richmond’s art galleries to the new Shockoe Design District, the Virginia Street Gallery represents a collaboration between two of Richmond’s vanguard creative communities.

The Virginia Street Gallery brings together more than 50 artists and galleries, many more commonly associated with the Richmond Arts District on Broad Street. Included are satellite locations presented by Quirk, Ghostprint and Eric Schindler galleries, as well as many of the locally and nationally-acclaimed artists whose works they exhibit like Thomas Van Auken, Bob Scott, Adam Goldsmith, Peter Fowler and Annegret A. Massey. Also lending their strong presence to the Virginia Street Gallery are many of Richmond’s established ceramics and sculpture artists who make their home at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, including instructor Jeff Vick.

With its mix of fine arts and curated gallery offerings, the Virginia Street Gallery represents a first for Richmond’s Shockoe area, showcasing contemporary elegance in fine arts, clothing, jewelry, furniture, quirky gifts and items for the home in an evolving space that is a short walk from the historic Kanawha Canal.

In addition to the Virginia Street Gallery, the Shockoe Design District is home to many preeminent Richmond names in home design and personal apparel, including These Four Walls, LaDifference, Ten Thousand Villages, Ledbury and many, many more retailers, restaurants and shops.

The Virginia Street Gallery is open Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery also is open by appointments and for special events.

Beginning this Saturday, November 5th, The Market Umbrella’s Virginia Street Gallery, an artist and artisan collective, will open its doors on Virginia Street in Richmond’s Shockoe Slip. The opening of this new gallery will coincide with Shockoe Design Day, a family friendly celebration of good food, good music, good deals and great style in the Shockoe Design District.

The Virginia Street Gallery to Open in Shockoe Design District

Beginning this November, the Virginia Street Gallery, an artist and artisan collective, will open its doors on Virginia Street in Richmond’s tony Shockoe Slip. In addition, the gallery’s annex location, overlooking the Canal Walk’s scenic turning basin, will provide vending opportunities for food and craft vendors as well as many talented musicians.

The opening of this new gallery collective will coincide with a major marketing initiative by business owners and by Venture Richmond to rebrand Shockoe Slip. The Shockoe Design District already has been promoted in the op-ed pages of The Richmond Times-Dispatch. On Nov. 5 the district will welcome the public with a grand opening launch party with live music, free food and other promotional events. The Market Umbrella and the Virginia Street Gallery Gallery — and you — will be an integral part of this event, as well as in defining the success of the Shockoe Design District.
